Gender Issues In Ancient Greece Essays - Operas, Antigone

Gender Issues In Ancient Greece anne brannen Gender Issues in ?Antigone? One of the most devastating problems for the Classical Greeks was the women's issue. Women in Classical Greece were not citizens, held no property, and indeed were not even allowed out of the house except under guard. Their status differed from that of the slaves of Greece only in name. This alone, however was not a problem -- the problem was that the Greeks knew, in their hearts, that this was wrong. Indeed, their playwrights harangued them about it from the stage of Athens continually. All of the great Grecian playwrights -- Sophocles, Euripedes, Aristophenes -- dealt with the women's issue. All of them argued, in their various ways, that the women of Greece were not nearly as incapable and weak as the culture believed them to be. All of them created female characters of strength and intelligence. But in ?Antigone,? the discussion reached its peak. Antigone herself, as she stands upon the Grecian stage, represents the highest ideals of human life -- courage and respect for the gods. A woman, she is nevertheless the exemplum for her society. But how are we to know this? Does the author let the audience know that it is Antigone herself, not Creon, the ?noble-eyed imperator? (453), who is to be believed? It is almost inconceivable that the audience would be meant to ignore Creon's apparently skillful arguments, for he appears to represent all that the Athenian should strive for. He stands for obedience to the State. Surely it is his voice we should obey. Sophocles does let us know where the truth lies, and he does this, amazingly, partly through his characterization of Creon. Though Creon seemingly says intelligent things, there are clues that he is not to be trusted. One would be his discussion of incest with Ismene. Torn between her duty to God and her duty to the State, Ismene, in the third act, has run to Creon, planning to tell him of Antigone's actions in the graveyard: ?O, not for me the dusty hair of youth, / But let us now unto the palace go? (465), she cries. But Creon, ignoring the supposedly important information she has to tell -- he has, after all, emptied the Theban coffers, spending money on his advanced spy network in search of the miscreant -- asks her, instead, to come home with him. ?How long, O Princess, O! How long!? he states, suggesting a time for their next meeting: ?Upon the hour of noon, or / Not upon the hour of six.? To such a pass has the doomed line of Oedipus come. It is clearly his fault that Ismene throws herself into the sea outside Thrace. Of course, it is Ismene's suicide that is the springboard for the rest of the action. She has shown herself to be all that the Athenian society desires her to be: obedient, pretty, sweet-tempered, and dead -- but it is not enough. Obedience has gotten the state nowhere, and women nowhere, and outside the walls of the city, the dead are still being buried at alarmingly fast rates, quicker, almost, than Creon can dig them up. Antigone solves the whole problem. Though she is, indeed, like Ismene, both pretty and dead at the end, she nevertheless provides a clear example of what women can do when they are trusted with power, rather than kept at home. For it is her newly formed women's rights group, based on the Lysistratan model, which creates the only solution to the Theban problem. Though Antigone herself is dead by the time the group comes up with their stunningly simple plan, it it her legacy which informs the decision. ?Not upon the dead nor yet / Upon the living base thy worth? (521), the Theban women cry, and upon their creation of a new burial ground, neither within the city, nor without, but within the walls of the city itself, they alone stop the civil war which threatens Thebes. Their ingenious solution provides a liminal space for the disgraced family of the late king, Oedipus. And the final scene, wherein the entire family joins Antigone, buried within the walls of Thebes, creates a physical metaphor of bonding and solidity. The traitor brother Polynices, the depressed sister Ismene, the political firebrand Antigone, joined with their uncle Creon and their hot-tempered cousin and his mother, all are together at last in harmony, united in the purpose of the defense of their beloved city against the Spartan onslaught, a sort of spiritual and physical mortar to the defensive

Organizational Analysis Case Study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Organizational Analysis Case Study - Essay Example It is the hope of this author that by analyzing the aforementioned determinants, the reader can come to a more informed and effective level of understanding with regards to how these determinants impact upon the overall level of profitability that the Home Depot has been able to enjoy within the past several years. Although it cannot be considered a step-by-step color by the numbers approach to success, mirroring the strategy and organizational approaches that the Home Depot has engendered will necessarily lead a given entity and/or organization to experience a higher level of success than they may otherwise have enjoyed. However, it must be cautioned that the Home Depot’s success story is ultimately one that is defined by current market conditions and pass eventualities. As such, the level and extent to which success can be defined for a given institution or business entity merely by following such an approach is necessarily limited. It is the hope of this author that such a level of analysis will enable the reader to come to a more appreciable level of understanding with regards to the direction to which the Home Depot should move within the coming months and years as a way of solidifying its place within the current market. Organizational Structure As with many retail giants that exist within corporate America, the Home Depot is organized under a chairman, Board of Directors, regions, and individual store managers. Such an organizational structure has not always existed for the Home Depot; rather, it was born out of a measure of success that the initial Home Depot offering was able to engender within the market. For growth and experience a rapid level of integration of success with regards to consumer needs and overall levels of profitability, such an organizational structure, mirroring many other existing corporate chain, was affected. This technique is an effective means of providing a degree of sequential management oversight and key strategy imple mentation with regards to the way in which the firm continues to grow and expand within the near future. Naturally, the key issue comes down to what degree of leverage and decision-making the board of directors leave up to the regional directors and the individual store managers; too great a degree of freedom necessarily decreases the effective level of oversight and strategy implementation that can be effected whereas too close a level of constraint can stifle any best practices that are region or geographic/demographic specific. Internal Environment: The internal environment is oftentimes defined as the events, entities, factors, conditions, and particularly the behavior of the stakeholders involved (the employees). Within such an understanding, the mission statement of the organization, the leadership styles employed, and the organizational culture are all core facets of what defines the internal environment with a Home Depot. Whereas the leadership style has briefly been referen ced above, the culture will be discussed at some link below, the court level of importance that must be understood with regards to the internal culture and environment that exists within the Home Depot is most certainly contingent upon the mission statement. In general hotel industry is a broad c ategory and includes the service industry at large covering the category of lodging, restaurant, recreation and many more. The hospitality industry on a global scale is a huge. There is high instance of economic activities going on within the global hospitality industry. Summing it all up and when we focus our attention to the hotel/hospitality industry in UAE also we feel that there are many interesting details to research about, especially the growth component of UAE hospitality industry in the current schemes of things. Literature Review First and foremost it should be understood that the very idea of hotel industry in general is a playground of huge economic activities. As we can observe, international industry presents a refined form of globalization and its influence in almost all sector and industries. The significant part is that globalization has opened up an avenue and numerous opportunities for hotel industry to reap the benefit from. Global Hospitality Industry Hospitality to be correct is much broader in scope. Some people do have a misplaced understanding as to what is hospitality industry.   The general perception of hospitality means the realms of hotel and restaurant. This is not wrong or incorrect to be precise, however, hospitality industry and its scope is broader and includes all features of entertainment and other aspects that amount towards serving guest and reception of visitors with liberty and good will. (Clayton W. Barrows, 2008 , p. 4) According to scholars and observers, they are of the opinion that the global hospitality industry is bound for a major boom and growth, due to increase internationalization of businesses and the worldwide presence of variety of services in the backdrop of globalization and its impact. An economic aspect that covers the range of activities within the hotel industry also is garnering steam. (Yu, 1999 , p. 3) In the current scheme of things it is said by experts that the global hospitality industry is on a growth path. Demands in the industry as far as service components encompassing hotel industry also is huge, which further boost the growth element to the point that meeting the demand seems to pose many issue when viewed from a business perspective and as far as operation goes. (ErnstYoung, 2011) Nonetheless, it also should be understood that ‘hospitality is the very important component of the service industry in any of the country national economy.† (Yu, 1999 , p. 4) Speaking of the hotel industry, it should also be understood that the components which feature the hotel industry can be classified and divided into two main segments, namely (i) Entertainment area (ii) Accommodation and Lodging. (Economy-Watch) Entertainment Areas: in the Entertainment Area, the hospitality services includes, clubs, bars, restaurants, casinos, and other forms of entertainment such as event planning and the likes, which are some example mentioned herein. (Economy-Watch) Accommodation and Lodging: On a larger note though, Accommodation and Lodging area of the hotel industry includes houses for rent, hotel accommodation, resorts, serviced apartments and also extend its range to motels, which are a factor of attraction for traveler due to the cost factor and comfy accommodation on a first come, first serve basis. (Economy-Watch) Apart from these and within the components of the hotel industry in the global scale, the very object of tourism also finds a pale of consideration. The structure of tourism and its components to a great extent defines the very object of hospitality industry. What is all about tourism and is feature can be measured within the realms of its components that includes providing tourist with comfy accommodation when it comes to their stay be it hotel, motel, lodges, guest houses furnished apartments or any other hospitality services. (Andrews, 2007 , p. 30) For this very reason we see as to why the tourism sector at most instance are in tie up with major hotels and accommodation providers and also with tour and traveler providers and thus boosting the growth of global tourism. Above all, it should not be forgotten that the hospitality industry is a huge employer, when compared and contrasted in context of the industry at large. Employment opportunities in the backdrop of booming global to urism and increasing and mushrooming international business provide a huge avenue for fresh graduate and those who are specially trained in the hospitality management aspects. The Style of Milan Kundera :: Biography Biographies Essays

The Style of Milan Kundera ex is ten tial ism - A philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe, regards human existence as unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one's acts. This word has been used when describing Milan Kundera’s style of writing. The term existentialism came from Jean Paul Sartre, a French philosopher. Existentialism emphasizes individual existence, freedom and choice. The philosophy focuses on the existence of man. Sartre believed that to be a true existentialist one must accept that there is no God therefore man is alone with only himself to rely on for all decisions. This gives man total freedom of choice. However with this total freedom comes the responsibility of knowing one must choose wisely. Kundera applies this philosophy to his characters in â€Å"The Unbearable Lightness of Being†. He shows us how the four lovers choices affect their lives. Will the characters choose lightness or weight? After seven years of living with the ‘heaviness† of Tereza, Tomas thinks he will enjoy â€Å"the sweet lightness of being† (Kundera P 30) when she leaves him. However, he soon realizes that the lightness of her absence is swiftly replaced by the heaviness of her absence. Franz on the other hand leaves his wife for Sabina, but when Sabina rejects him and his wife will not take him back Franz finds that he enjoys the lightness of his life. Tomas wished to be free but found it was not what he wanted at all. Franz who wished to be tied reveled in his freedom. â€Å"At last he ceased to be a little boy; for the first time in his life he was on his own.† (Kundera p120) Sabina did not want to be Mari-Claude. She did not want to share a marriage bed with Franz, but when she left him her lightness was not joy, it was emptiness. â€Å" What fell to her lot was not the burden [heaviness] but the unbearable lightness of being.† (Kundera P 122) When Tereza has sex with the engineer she thought it would help her understand how Tomas could sleep with many women in lightness without the burden of love. Tereza thinks, â€Å"How she [Tereza] wished she could learn lightness!†(Kundera P143) Instead she thought if the engineer â€Å"addressed her soul† she would have fallen in love with him at that instant.

Movie Analysis: The Twilight Essay

Outline I.Introduction A.Thesis Statement The movie Twilight Eclipse was the third part of the Twilight Saga. This movie was just a romance movie with a twist. The director and producer tried to bring the old and the new together by encompassing what we think we know about vampires and adding a new dimension to it. With the latest cinematography and the new technology they made every scene believable and kept the audience wanting more. It showed us a new vampire and werewolves. II.Body paragraph # 1- Topic Sentence #1 Throughout the movie the audience was kept enthralled by sequence of event and the ever changing relationships between the wolves’, vampires, and Bella. A.Supporting Evidence Each scene in the movie was full of action and suspense like the one with the confrontation between Edward and Jacob. How the director made it point to do a close up on Edward when he confronted Jacob about the kiss. The amount of restraint that showed on his face. B.Explanation For both actors to be convincing regarding their other side and believable about their human side took dedication and the right camera angle to pull it off. C.So What? This was accomplished with perfect shot and the correct angles and lighting.. III.Body paragraph # 2- Topic Sentence #2 Every movie we ever seen with vampire depicted them as heartless with only one goal and that is to feed. Yet this movie showed us a total different aspect. Was it believable or not. The directors point of view was evident in every shot. A.Supporting Evidence The scene with Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Rosalie (Nikki Reed) on the balcony and Rosalie tells Bella she is making a wrong choice. In this scene we are able to see the director giving vampires a new look. He is giving them feelings something we have not seen in other movies. B.Explanation The scene takes place on the balcony of Edwards home and the lighting is soft and there is very little sound other than the words that are being spoken. We can read the pain in Rosalie eyes as she speaks but what she has missed by being a vampire and how Bella is just giving this up as if it is nothing. C.So What? It is ironic if you think about the other movies we have seen and we look at this one because the Cullen is like no other Vampires we have ever heard of. All the discussion between them make us feel their pain the regret that they have but it also shows the love they have for each other and how protective they are for there family. IV.Body paragraph # 3- Topic Sentence #3 As the story progress we were able to see the direction in which the director wanted us to go. Even though this was a love story it showed the innovation of the writers and director. Each scene had the exact demographic of the time period in which it was encompassing. Whether we were in the present or the past the scene was believable. A.Supporting Evidence When they went to the past and Rosalie was telling how she became a vampire you could almost smell the air just from the scene that unfolded. You could smell the liquor on her fiancà © breath you could feel the excitement come off the men around her and you could taste the fear she felt. B.Explanation As her fiancà © grabbed her and breathe on her and spoke unspeakable words the terror was coming off the screen. But even more than that the music and the lighting gave away the fear she was experiencing. C.So What? V.Body paragraph #4- Topic Sentence #4 A.The actors in this movie were not well known prior to the Twilight Saga however now they will be known as stars. This movie has elevated there status in the movie industry. Jacob (Taylor Lautner) has become a star player in the movie industry due to this movie. B.Explanation He later starred in Abduction. C.So What? VI.Conclusion As the movie came to a conclusion we all had a new respect for Vampires and Werewolves. The old look was of a blood thirsty individual that would not stop for nothing. The werewolves also was portrayed in earlier movies as unable to stop once they turned yet in this movie they feel, they love and they are a unit that have progressed into a family. This was the beginning of woman power. This time gave woman the power to know that they did not have to rely on a man to survive. Yes it nice to have one by your side but it is better to achieve on your own. Those men who felt threaten by the women should have felt strength by it because with a strong woman beside them they could accomplish so much more. The Religious Right Definition and Issues

The Religious Right Definition and Issues The movement generally referred to in the U.S. as the Religious Right came of age in the late 1970s. While its extremely diverse and shouldnt be characterized in simple terms, its an ultraconservative religious response to the sexual revolution. Its a response to events that are seen by Religious Right proponents as being connected to the sexual revolution. Its goal is to effect this religious response as public policy. Family Values From a Religious Right perspective, the sexual revolution has brought American culture to a fork in the road. Either the American people can endorse a traditional and religious institution of family and the values of loyalty and self-sacrifice along with it, or they can endorse a secular hedonistic lifestyle grounded in self-gratification and with it a profound moral nihilism. Proponents of the Religious Rights approach to public policy do not tend to see any broadly applicable alternatives to these two possibilities- such as a hedonistic religious culture or a deeply moral secular culture- for religious reasons. Abortion If the modern Religious Right had a birthday, it would be January 22, 1973. That was the day the Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Roe v. Wade, establishing that all women have the right to choose to have an abortion. For many religious conservatives, this was the ultimate extension of the sexual revolution- the idea that sexual and reproductive freedom could be used to defend what many religious conservatives consider to be murder. Lesbian and Gay Rights Religious Right proponents tend to blame the sexual revolution for increasing social acceptance of homosexuality, which some religious conservatives regard as a contagious sin that can be spread to youth by exposure. Hostility toward lesbians and gay men reached a fever pitch in the movement during the 1980s and 1990s, but the movement has since transitioned into a calmer, more measured opposition to gay rights initiatives such as  same-sex marriage, civil unions, and nondiscrimination laws. Pornography The Religious Right has also tended to oppose the legalization and distribution of pornography. It considers it to be another decadent effect of the sexual revolution. Media Censorship While media censorship has not often been a central legislative policy position of the Religious Right, individual activists within the movement have historically seen the increase of sexual content on television as a dangerous symptom of and a sustaining force behind cultural acceptance of sexual promiscuity. Grassroots movements such as the Parents Television Council have taken aim at television programs that contain sexual content or that appear to condone sexual relations outside of marriage. Religion in Government The Religious Right is often associated with attempts to defend or reintroduce government-sponsored religious practices ranging from government-endorsed school prayer to government-funded religious monuments. But such policy controversies are generally seen within the Religious Right community as symbolic battles, representing flashpoints in the culture war between religious supporters of family values and secular supporters of hedonistic culture. The Religious Right and Neoconservatism Some leaders within the Religious Right  see theocratic movements within Islam as a greater threat than secular culture since the events of 9/11. The 700 Clubs Rev. Pat Robertson endorsed thrice-divorced, pro-choice former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani in the 2008 presidential elections because of Giulianis perceived tough stance against religion-motivated terrorism. The Future of the Religious Right The concept of the Religious Right has always been vague, nebulous, and vaguely insulting toward the tens of millions of evangelical voters who are most often counted among its ranks. Evangelical voters are as diverse as any other voting bloc, and the Religious Right as a movement- represented by organizations such as the Moral Majority and the Christian Coalition- never received evangelical voters ubiquitous support. Is the Religious Right a Threat?   It would be naive to say that the Religious Right no longer poses a threat to civil liberties, but it no longer poses the most serious threat to civil liberties- if it ever did. As the general atmosphere of obedience following the September 11 attacks demonstrated, all demographics can be manipulated by fear. Some religious conservatives are more motivated than most by the fear of a potentially hedonistic, nihilistic culture. The proper response to that fear is not to dismiss it but to help find more constructive ways to respond to it.

Discrimination Broken Down essays

Discrimination Broken Down essays Why should a company have to lower its standards of hiring the best people? Why should a university not try to recruit the top students in the country? They shouldn ¡Ã‚ ¯t have too. However, Fred L. Pincus, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, would like them to change their standards in order to avoid the appearance of discrimination. In his article entitled, From Individualism to Structural Discrimination, published in Rereading America: Cultural Contexts for Critical Thinking and Writing, Pincus breaks discrimination into three specific types. He succeeds in explaining the more common types of discrimination, but his explanation of  ¡Ã‚ °structural discrimination ¡ is not as effective and causes him to lose credibility in his argument that all three types of discrimination must be confronted if  ¡Ã‚ °racial equality is to be achieved ¡ (592). From the start of Pincus ¡Ã‚ ¯s article, he is conveying his biased opinion. He states,  ¡Ã‚ °Prejudice ¡ does not necessarily lead to discrimination ¡ and discrimination is not always caused by prejudice ¡ (586). Pincus ¡Ã‚ ¯s explanation of what discrimination is sounds like a contradiction. Everyone knows that the roots of discrimination can be found in people ¡Ã‚ ¯s prejudices. Discrimination is always caused by prejudice. Pincus uses his position as a professor of sociology to convince the reader that his opinion should be taken as fact. He references the book Black Power, written by Stokley Carmichael and Charles Hamilton. In this  ¡Ã‚ °influential book ¡ (587) the authors do differentiate discrimination into two types, individual and institutional. Pincus, however, decides to explain not two, but three types of discrimination. He calls the last type of discrimination  ¡Ã‚ °Structural discrimination. ¡ Nobody could possibly argue with Pincus about his first type of discrimination and his classification of it. It...
